Fremantle
The Port City of Fremantle is one of Perth's most popular destinations for visitors looking for a great meal, coffee or just a fun night out.
With more than 2 million visitors a year, Fremantle is definitely on the "must-see" list for tourists visiting Perth. It's often thought of as the 2nd capital of WA, and is the 2nd largest retail centre outside of Perth City.
As WA's major commercial port, Fremantle has its own unique character and charm, and is a very multicultural place. Lots of Europeans (particularly Italians) settled in Fremantle after WW2, hence its plethora of cafes, restaurants and other great food outlets.
In addition, because of its age and importance to the early years of colonisation of WA, it has some excellent historical tourist attractions, including the WA Maritime Museum, Fremantle Prison, the Fremantle History Museum and The Round House (the oldest remaining building in WA - it was built as a jail and was the first permanent building in the colony).
Within easy walking or cycling distance, visitors can experience the circus, fine crafts, original music and theatre, exciting galleries, museums, bookshops and some great street buskers.
Along with maritime history and extensive architectural conservation, the Arts have become a central part of Fremantle life where visitors can discover the past and present.
Many of Fremantle's Arts organisations are based in some of the wonderful old historic buildings left behind from a bygone era. They're a great reminder of her history.
Fremantle offers so many opportunties for the tourist to enjoy a wide range of activities in a relaxed atmosphere. Whether you choose to browse through the markets or enjoy a cappucino at one of the MANY excellent cafes, and a yummy feed of pasta at a great Italian restaurant, you're sure to enjoy your experience of Fremantle, no matter where you're from.
It's easy to get to Fremantle as well. You can catch the train from Perth, or drive, or get on one of the many buses that travel to and from the port city. Once there, just relax and enjoy the ambience. Even the Perth locals love to come down to Freo (as it's affectionately called) for a few hours R&R, so you're sure to have a great time there as well.
