Tasmania

South East

Your visit to Tasmania isn’t complete without spending time on the magnificent Tasman Peninsula, where past and present mingle.

The peninsula is almost an island apart - when you turn right at the historic town of Sorell, you’re heading south for scenery, wildlife, heritage and adventure.

Along the Peninsula, you can discover fine heritage buildings and admire the bold swirls of glaze on contemporary pottery. You’ll sample the region’s superb cool-climate wines, and savour some of the local specialties - octopus, oysters, quail and venison. You may also encounter some of the local inhabitants - playful dolphins; our unique Tasmanian devil; or a majestic sea eagle, soaring from cliffs in the Tasman National Park.

The Convict Trail

After leaving the city of Clarence, the road via Richmond and Sorell to Eaglehawk Neck passes through picturesque rural countryside and bush before providing your first tantalising glimpse of the Tasman Peninsula on the approach down to Eaglehawk Neck.

This is a whole world of its own with amazing discoveries requiring frequent sidetracks off the main roads.

Although the journey to Port Arthur is only about one and a half hours travelling time directly, the journey to Richmond en route could take anything from half a day to two days depending on one’s passion for wines and/or fascination with an “authentic” Georgian village.

It would be easy to spend a week on this journey. There is so much to see and do.

Richmond

Twenty-five kilometres of country road and 100 years from Hobart City is the historic town of Richmond, with its fine Georgian architecture impressively intact with memories of days gone by. It’s an original village of slate and cobbles, handmade brick and mellow stone, cottages and manors. You will marvel at historical gems unmatched elsewhere in Australia.

Simply Lush offers a range of luxury accommodation ideas, from a heritage bed & breakfast to a classic Georgian house boasting first class service in an 1830's old world ambience.
