Gippsland

Victoria's Lakes and Wilderness area is located in the eastern corner of the state. In this region you are able to enjoy beaches and waterways and yet still be only a short distance away from an alpine wilderness. The Lakes District is the largest inland waterway system in Australia, and has over 400 square kilometres of waterways.

Lakes Entrance is the main centre of the Lakes District and it is Victoria's largest fishing port. The three main lakes - Lake King, Lake Victoria and Lake Wellington - are all joined and fed by the rivers which start in the High Country.

The Lakes National Park, the Glenaladale National Park and the hills and valleys of the alpine foothills to the north provide plenty of opportunities for bushwalking, watching the wildlife and enjoying the peace and quiet.

One of the places we recommend you visit is Metung. As the only dedicated village on the shores of the Victorian coastal Gippsland Lakes, the people of Metung really do live the good life. And, more importantly, they love to share their haven with visitors. Set on a narrow neck of land, Metung looks out over the waters of King and Victoria lakes to the Lakes National Park. It is a unique location in an environment tailored to marine recreation, fishing, beachcombing and bushwalking in a lake studded park. Check out Clovelly House, a charming and elegant bed and breakfast perched on a landscaped hill overlooking Metung and the waters of Bancroft Bay

The area has long held special significance for the Aborigines and their presence over thousands of years is symbolised by the formation known by the locals as the ancient Aboriginal Rock. Metung is deliciously secluded, yet close to the nearby Princes Highway

You might also like to check out Mallacoota Inlet while you explore the Lakes & Wilderness region. The area offers all the comforts a visitor may want with excellent accommodation (Gipsy Point Luxury Lakeside Apartments are beautifully positioned on the upper reaches of the Mallacoota Inlet and the Lakes) and fine restaurants. There are also many attractions to see and numerous activities like fishing the rivers and inlets, canoeing, swimming, bushwalking into nature or just plain relaxing at the campsite.
