Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road traverses the south-west coast of Victoria, and is one of the most spectacular ocean drives in the world.
Travel one of the world's most scenic roads through an extended area that includes the world-famous Twelve Apostles, the Otways rainforest, Bells Beach, on the Surf Coast, and the Great Ocean Road itself. Torquay and nearby Bells Beach are the home of Australia's surfing culture
Those of you wanting something to do, other than drive the Great Ocean Road itself, might like to indulge in a little boutique shopping at Lorne, fine dining on the coast, bushwalking, hangliding, abseiling, bird watching or horse riding along the beach. The Great Ocean Road is about the natural outdoors as well as superb food and accommodation.
In the winter months the Great Ocean Road is a fantastic place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, or rekindle a romance. Deserted windswept beaches, cosy cabins and open fires, frosty mornings and fresh air. If you time it right, in the winter months, you might get to see the Southern Right Whales, which frequent the southern Victorian coast to bear their young. We don't recommend you go swimming though, because the water is rather chilly at this time of year.
No matter what your plans, you simply must set aside some time to go visit the world-famous 12 Apostles. These giant rock islands are a central feature of the Port Campbell National Park. Over many centuries, mother nature has gradually eroded the softer limestone, forming caves in the cliffs which became arches and when they collapsed, rock islands as high as 45 metres were left isolated from the shore.
There are some lovely Great Ocean Road accommodation choices, including some fabulous bed and breakfasts, that will happily entertain you, feed you and keep you warm and comfortable at night, so that you can explore the region during the day. Just be sure to bring warm clothes if you are travelling through the region in winter.
