Alpine Region
Any visit to Victoria would not be complete without a visit to the Alpine Region, affectionally known as the Australian Alps. A region of breathtaking landscapes and fresh alpine air offering majestic national parks, an abundance of adventure activities, welcoming cellar doors and a colourful food culture. And the best part of all, is that it's only a few hours drive from Melbourne.
You can choose which Winter Wonderland mountain to visit, from Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Dinner Plain and Mt Buffalo. We recommend that if you go to Falls Creek, Victoria's premier alpine region ski resort, that you check out Frueauf Village. It is an oasis in the heart of the Australian Alps. Luxurious architect-designed self-contained apartments and chalets for the ultimate winter escape. Of course, if Mt Beauty is more your speed, then be sure to look up Braeview Bed & Breakfast, set amongst a lush expansive garden.
The Alpine region also hosts many festivals, giving tourists a chance to have lots of fun (in & out of the snow), and also sample many of the delicious local foods & wines. Perhaps you might enjoy the Crystal Creek Sled Dog Challenge, Australia’s only on-snow sled dog event, usually held in August, or the Alpine Valleys Gourmet Weekend (held in January), or the Mount Beauty Music Muster (held in April). Celebrating the heart of the high country, the Music Muster is a gathering of musicians, dancers, poets and folk from the region and around Australia. It offers a combination of all kinds of music for every taste from classical to nonsense, based on a folk festival format.
Even when the snows are gone, the Alpine Region has many wonderful sights, sounds, tastes and experiences for the visitor, so be sure, when contacting one of our recommended luxury accommodation spots, that you ask them what events of note are on during the time of your visit.
